Introduction
Covenant can simply be defined by an agreement between two or more parties. In most cases covenants are made for the purpose of establishing a common ground (terms and conditions) that will lead to a lasting relationship between both parties. Here we looking covenant made between an eternal sovereign God and a mortal man to sustain the relationship between divinity and humanity.
From the time of creation God has shown himself to be a covenant God. After he created all things and put man in charge, he gave man condition he must meet in order their relationship to continue (Genesis 2:16-17) but man failed to uphold his side of the agreement and this brought a barrier in the relationship between God and the entire mankind. But God didn’t give up in His part instead he took steps in restoring the relationship with man. The Old Testament is majorly God approach in in view of restoring his fellowship with mankind. By this he made covenant with certain men ranging from Noah, to Abraham, to Israel and then to David but eventually man always fail in upholding their side of the covenant. God saw the weakness of men (Genesis 6:3; Isaiah 63:10; Psalm 78:36-41), and he established a new and everlasting covenant, one that will completely restore all the broken covenants that came before it. This new covenant was fulfilled by God’s son (Romans 10:4), Jesus Christ. He became a man fulfilled all requirement lacking in previous covenants and perfected the human side of the covenant between God and man (Romans 8:4) and sealed it with his blood(Luke 22:20).
The new covenant has perfect and sealed the relationship between God and man for all times and can never been broken therefore there is no other covenant anywhere by which any man can and will find favor and grace with God (1 Corinthians 3:11).
